Vitiligo: 5 Frequently Asked Questions

We collected some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) you may have about vitiligo. If you were recently diagnosed or are suffering from a chronic skin disorder, go through these questions and answers to discuss them with your doctor.

What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a long-term skin disorder that causes the loss of pigmentation. As a result, white patches (of pale skin color in many cases) appear and grow on the different part of the body. They often first emerge on areas of skin that are exposed to the sun, typically affecting both sides of the body. The progression of the disorder is unpredictable.

Why do white patches appear in vitiligo?

At times, the immune system incorrectly destroys the melanocytes (the cells responsible for pigmentation) in the skin, which results in the appearance of white patches on the different part of the body. However, many researchers strongly believe that in vitiligo, the melanocytes are not destroyed by the immune system, they are destroyed by themselves.

What causes vitiligo?

Although research is ongoing, to date there is no known cause of vitiligo. However, it has been closely linked to genetics. People with a family history of the same condition or other autoimmune diseases (such as hyperthyroidism, alopecia areata, and pernicious anemia) often develop vitiligo.

Several studies suggest that vitiligo can be triggered by hormonal changes, frequent episodes of jaundice or typhoid fever, lengthy antibiotic treatments, and acute emotional trauma. Some even claim that the intake of insecticide/pesticide treated vegetables, usage of heavy immunosuppressant drugs, regular junk food intake and carelessness in hygiene can cause chronic skin disorder. Nothing has been proven so far.

Can vitiligo be prevented?

Since the exact cause of vitiligo is not known, it cannot be prevented. However, the appearance of the affected skin can be enhanced with vitiligo treatment.

Is vitiligo contagious?

Vitiligo is neither infectious nor contagious. Since it is an autoimmune disorder, it cannot be passed through contact or transmitted via touch, saliva, blood transfusion, inhalation, sexual association or the sharing of personal items.

Vitiligo– a skin condition that is not a threat to your physical health can still have a big impact your emotional wellbeing. Vitiligo causes pale white patches on the skin. The reason for this problem is an absence of a pigment in the skin which is called melanin. This skin problem can influence any area of one’s skin, however, most normally; it impacts face, neck and hands, and other body areas.

Vitiligo is neither infectious nor contagious. Vitiligo does not cause skin problem like skin cancer, leprosy etc. Vitiligo is not a result of foods you intake or lifestyle you follow. This is found that people with vitiligo are normal. This disease does not cause or prompt any other kind of disabilities.

Vitiligo: Symptoms & Causes

Cells called melanocytes produce pigment. When melanocytes die or stop producing pigment, skin develops light patches. Vitiligo is a disorder in which the immune system attacks melanocytes. It may be triggered by stress, sunburn, or chemical exposure.

“Spilt milk” patches usually appear first on sun-exposed areas – face, lips, hands, arms, and feet. The condition can progress to genitals, inside the nose and mouth, and other parts of the body. Some patients experience premature whitening of hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hair. Vitiligo can also affect the colored portion (retina) of eyes.
